International Labour Day is the international holiday of working people.

May 1 is celebrated as Worker's day as official holiday in a serial of countries - China, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Thailand, Russia and others, among all Bulgaria too.

In USA and Canada the Worker's day id feted on first Monday of September.

The holiday origin is connected with the international socialistic movement in XIX century and the worker's protest for social rights.

The holiday has been celebrated also in the Third Reich under the name ‘Emperor Labour Day' (Reichsarbeitstag).

It all begins in 1886 in Chicago where is organized the first in world history common international strike. More than 300, 000 workers go out on the street, demanding introducing of 8 hour work day.

After 3 days of protests, the strike is dispelled by police and 8 of the striking workers have been killed.

During the next year May 1 slightly starts to be celebrated in almost all countries, but mostly in the socialistic and communistic countries.

The International Labour Day I celebrated in Bulgaria for the first time in 1890 year. In the years of communistic Bulgaria (1944 - 1989) the holiday had been marked with large organized meeting and celebrations throughout the whole country.

Presently the May 1 Worker's Day is officially off-day in Bulgaria, but the state doesn't engage itself with organizing and conducting of massive official celebration.
