Credit growth in Bulgaria stayed strong in January 2008, rising at same record growth rate recorded in December last year, Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) data released on February 25 showed.

In January, the volume of new loans rose by 63.2 per cent, compared with the same month of last year, and pushed the loan portfolio of Bulgarian banks to 38.4 billion leva, BNB statistics showed.

Corporate loans added 69.9 per cent whereas loans to households and not-for-profit loans were up 52.2 per cent against the same period a year ago. The central bank said that would announce the average interest rates in January at the end of February.

The loan portfolio of Bulgarian banks grew by a record 62.5 per cent in 2007, despite BNB attempts to slow down lending by cutting down the resources available to banks.
