Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin and US ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle signed a road map for the inclusion of Bulgaria in a programme for visa-free travel to the USA. A visa-free travel regime will not be enforced in the coming two years, Beyrle said after signing the document. Bulgaria has to show it does not tolerate organised crime and to take specific measures against it, before the agreement is implemented, the Bulgarian National Radio reported.
US embassy data shows nearly 25 000 Bulgarians receive visas each year. More than 9000 students visited the US last year on work and travel programmes. Their number is expected to reach 15 000 this year. Beyrle said the biggest problem is that a large number of the Bulgarians that visit the US remain there illegally. Until the number of Bulgarian illegal immigrants does not decrease the visa regime will remain, Beyrle said.
