Frigid weather blanketed much of Bulgaria on Monday, temperatures falling to as low as minus 17 degrees Celsius in the northern parts of the country.

The freezing temperatures that hit much of northern and eastern Europe over the past week have descended on several Balkan countries, claiming victims in Romania and Turkey. The cold front, which reached Bulgaria and Greece on Monday, is not expected to ease until later in the week.

In Bulgaria's capital Sofia the mercury fell to minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Schools in 18 municipalities have been closed in fears of the harsh weather. In the northern region of Silistra the temperatures fell to minus 22 degrees Celsius, the head of the local Civil Defence department engineer Yavor Minkov announced.

The snow cover in the country was from 3 to 15 cm. In Eastern Bulgaria there were strong winds with speed of up to 18m/sec.

Electricity supplies were cut but later restored in seven villages in Vratsa region, Northern Bulgaria. Two towns in the region of Shumen, however, remain without water supply.

Varna and Burgas airports are working normally. The airports across the country are also executing their tasks on schedule. Flights to and from Sofia Airport were carried out as scheduled, despite Monday's worsened weather.

Meanwhile, Bulgarian railway transport officials have said that trains were also moving without any major trouble.

In Bulgaria's second largest city, Plovdiv, faced road traffic problems and also had to temporarily close down its airport.

Over the next two day Bulgaria's National Electricity Company is expecting record high electricity consumption. It might reach the record 6,800 MW/h, NEC's chief dispatcher Mityo Hristozov predicted.

Forecasts say daytime temperatures are to ease no earlier than Thursday.
