A Canadian tour composed of 45 cyclists left İstanbul on Aug. 4 and is to pass through all of the countries on the Silk Road via bicycle.
According to the program organized by D’Afrique Tour in Toronto, the race will finish in Beijing. The cyclist group will cover 10,000 kilometers along the Silk Road, passing through Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and China. D’Afrique Tour representative Henry Gold stated that bicycle stools would be specially ordered for the comfort of participants and added that if this venture was successful, they would undertake another four-month trip to include African and Arab countries.
There are 20 women and 25 men participating in the tour. Among the women are there doctors, teachers, nurses, businesswomen and housewives. The 45 cyclists come from Canada, property in France (http://francerealestate.info), South Africa, Holland, Austria and England.
Many participating cyclists have gone on world cycling tours before. Pieter Bergsuma, a 70-year-old Dutchman, is one of them. Finnish university student Jukka Salmnen has covered 25,000 kilometers by bicycle in two years. Achim Janders, 40, is risking his life in pursuit of a dream by going on this tour despite his stomach cancer. The German cyclist, who traveled from his country to join the tour through Austria, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey, is proving that disease is not an obstacle to his goal.
