Bulgarian healthcare service regulations will be amended this summer, Deputy Health Minister Matei Mateev said.

After Bulgaria's EU accession the country will have to accept common union standards, giving union citizens equal service and travel rights among which free healthcare, Mateev said.

EU citizens will be able to receive free of charge emergency aid if they have European health card, Focus news agency reported.

Tourists coming from non-EU countries will receive free medical aid if they have the compulsory health insurance.

Mateev said that nearly 80 per cent of all tourists in Bulgaria come from EU countries, which is nearly four million people.

Bulgarian medics will have to sign contracts with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) if they want to provide free healthcare service to EU citizens.
