At long last, Sofia boasts a new airport that meets all European standards

The new passenger terminal opens its doors today at Sofia Airport. This becomes a fact 67 years after the construction of the old one, built by the German Wehrmacht in 1939 and reconstructed by Zdravko Velichkov, former director of the airport in 2000. This event is extremely important not only for Sofia but for the entire country as the new terminal will become the symbol of the New Bulgaria. PM Sergei Stanishev will cut the ribbon at 12 sharp. After that the first passengers coming from the capital of the EU - Brussels will pass through the terminal.
As of tomorrow, the new terminal will handle all the passengers of Bulgarian Air, Hemus Air and Viaggio Air. In the first weeks of the New Year all passengers of foreign companies will be transferred to the new terminal. The new terminal will be nearly four times bigger than the old one - 56,500 sq. m. of built-up area compared with the 15,000 sq. m. of the old terminal. It is designed to handle 2.6 million passengers per year and 1500 passengers in the rush
