Archeologists have unearthed finds supporting the thesis that the troops of Emir Orkhan have looted and set on fire the fortress of Perperikon that was built over an ancient Thracian sanctuary.
"Probably the capture of Perperikon was one of the main goals of the invading Ottoman troops in 1362," said Prof. Nikolai Ovcharov. "The citizens of the ancient town resisted and therefore the place was set on fire. The people grabbed their most precious possessions and hid in the fortress. The findings reveal that the invading Turks desecrated Christian relics and tortured the defenders of the fortress."
Some of the recent findings excavated at the site are an ancient ring with a seal and many coins.
