Britain’s interior ministry was considering manners of stopping the immigration wave expected from Southeastern Europe once Bulgaria and Romania became EU members, Mail on Sunday reported.
Nearly 300 000 Bulgarians and Romanians were expected to travel to the UK in 2007, Darik Radio reported.
At the same time human rights laws state that regulations applying for immigrants already in the country should be valid for newcomers as well. Nearly 600 000 Polish immigrants already live in the UK.
By the end of the year British ministers need to decide on the access of Bulgarian and Romanian workers to the UK labour market.
According to interior ministry sources some restrictions might be enforced for the newcomers from Bulgaria and Romania. According to Mail on Sunday Bulgarian and Romanian living standards were below those in Poland.
One of the options involves the issuing of limited number of labour permits, the newspaper reported.
