UK was among the strongest supporters of Bulgaria’s on-time EU entry on January 1 2007, Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin found out during a meeting with British secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs Margaret Beckett.
Kalfin is on a work trip to the UK, an official Foreign Ministry press release said.
Beckett said that Britain followed closely the implementation of EU-related reforms in Bulgaria. Bulgaria already achieved progress but needed to focus all efforts on problematic areas, like the fight against corruption and organised crime, said she.
Kalfin presented measures undertaken to deal with criticism in the problematic spheres mentioned in the latest European Commission report on Bulgaria’s readiness to joint the EU.
Britain evaluated positively Bulgaria’s participation in international peacekeeping operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, said Beckett.
Other bilateral relations issues were discussed as well. Possibilities for the removal of the visa regime before Bulgaria’s EU entry and mutual taxation regulations featured among the topics.
