How is the implementation of Bulgaria's commitments to the EU on the agriculture chapter going on? European commissioners that visited Bulgaria in the last couple of months give an answer to the question. It ibecomes clear from their statement that there has been a remarkable progress in the problematic areas envisaged in the autumn monitoring report. Reforms in veterinary medicine, milk, fruit and the vegetables production sectors had so-called "red boxes."
The visit of the European commissioners ended some ten days ago. Marian Fisher-Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture in the EU, also visited Bulgaria.
"I am pleasantly surprised that the ruling coalition and the opposition in Bulgaria are so unanimous and support the reforms that Bulgaria is expected to pursue," said Marian Fisher-Boel.
The Bulgarian Agriculture Ministry also made several important steps towards Bulgaria's EU membership. The law regulating veterinary services in Bulgaria was adopted and came into effect in May. The construction of border veterinary checkpoints is expected to be completed by September, after that they will be accredited by European experts so that they can become operational before Bulgaria's accession to the EU in 2007.
The other crucial point is the building of a new incinerator which will be financed with money from the Phare Program but will not be ready by 2007.
Reforms in the milk sector are already nearing completion.
