Treasure hunters tour southwestern Bulgaria and virtually plow farmlands seeking ancient riches. Thus they secure themselves access to the ancient tombs nearby, according to Vassilka Paunova, archeologist in the regional museum of archeology in Pernik. Once getting access to the private property, treasure hunters abandon their tractors and dig 5-10-metre-deep holes into the tombs. The treasure hunters are interested in metal objects, the problem is that during their hunt they ruin averything else around, archeologists complain. A stone tomb in a village nearby with tunnels and a gallery was completely destroyed. Two tomb mounds near it were also devastated.
Meanwhile, archeologists from Pernik made new discoveries during the construction of the Strouma motorway. They came across the remnants of antique and medieval settlements, an antique road and a Turkish bridge over the Strouma River. In the village of Stefanovo a chapel has been recently built over an undiscovered antique sanctuary and a whole wall of it has been destroyed.
