Ambassador Beyrle praises Mayor Lechkov
"Jordan Lechkov has done a really good job finding firms that can carry out infrastructure projects around the Novo Selo firing ground," said US Ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle after a 45-minute meeting with the Mayor of Sliven (east Bulgaria) Jordan Lechkov.
Lechkov has been giving full information about the potentials of local firms, working in construction and in the field of services. The USA is working under projects for improving the infrastructure around the biggest firing ground in Bulgaria.
"We bear the responsibility that the US taxpayers' money will be spent as rationally as possible," said Beyrle. He announced that draft contracts are already being prepared and that the US is looking for contractors and subcontractors.
A brigade of US troops will be deployed in Novo Selo. The staff will vary
between two and three thousand people. Troops coming from other countries will be trained at the firing ground for five, six or nine months. A commission of Washington experts that began examining the environment in the region around the future military bases arrived in December.
"We will do our best to be good guests in Bulgaria," said the ambassador.
He confirmed the information reported by the Standart daily that there would be a combined military training exercise between American, Bulgarian and Romanian troops that will take place in July. The first part of the exercise will be carried out in Novo Selo and the second - in Romania.
"Thanks God Bulgaria is a democratic country and it is normal that various opinions exist," said the ambassador commenting on the question whether the US will respond to the campaign of the Bulgarian ultra nationalist party Ataka against the US military bases.
"Bulgarian leaders have a clear stand about the priorities of your country and I admire the way they defend Bulgarian interests," said Beyrle.
