"The US Government plans to invest 30,860,000 euro in the improvement of the infrastructure of the military airbase in Bezmer," US Ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle said yesterday. The money will be used for widening of the base's runway.
"Bezmer is one of the two Bulgarian military bases, preferred for deployment of US troops. The US militaries will come to Bulgaria in 2007 at the earliest," Mr. Beyrle explained.
He also said that the joint military facilities would be Bulgarian -the Bulgarian national colors would be raised over the bases and the soldiers will be commanded by Bulgarian generals.
"We are well aware of your apprehensions but, we hope, we will be good neighbors and guests," Mr. Beyrle added.
He had talks with Kiril Todorov, Mayor of Yambol in southeastern Bulgaria, and Georgi Georgiev, Mayor of Tundzha.
The US troops to Bulgaria will total 3,500 in number and they will be deployed here against a rotational principle, without their families.
Three point six hectares of the land around Bezmer village will be expropriated for the needs of the militaries. The project for the terrain is to be worked out in 2007 and the reconstruction is scheduled for March 2008-October 2009.
"The environment protection requirements will be strictly observed in the area of the two military bases - the Bezmer Airbase and the Novo Selo military exercise ground," said Beyrle.
