Hundreds lit candles in the New York Cathedral and St George Orthodox church in Los Angeles

Bulgarians living in the USA merged three holidays in one as on Sunday they celebrated March 1 (Baba Marta), the national holiday - Liberation Day, March 3rd and Shrovetide, the day of forgiveness in Bulgaria, Bulgarian Metropolitan for the USA, Canada and Australia - Joseph told the Focus News Agency.
Hundreds of Bulgarians lit candles in the cathedral in New York where a solemn liturgy was served including a requiem for the Bulgarian and Russian soldiers who died in the Liberation War and a prayer for the Bulgarian people. At the Vespers, after the liturgy, everybody asked one another for forgiveness, as the tradition goes.
The only Bulgarian newspaper in California - Obzor, appealed to all Bulgarians to take part in the celebrations of the three holidays in Los Angeles. There the celebrations started at 11h with a liturgy and an all-Christian pardon service in the Orthodox Church St George. Later, children from the Bulgarian schools entertained guests with traditional songs and dances. Everybody wore martenitsas. The VIP guests at the celebrations were the families of Bulgaria's new consul to Los Angeles Alexandrina Gigova, the commercial attache Pavel Stamboliiski and the technical secretary Vera Ancheva.
