Seven of every ten Bulgarians are proud of being Bulgarians and every second - of being a European, according to a survey by Eurobarometer. By approval of 59%, Bulgaria keeps its place in the list of countries well-disposed to the European Union and ranks after Ireland, Romania and Turkey. Critical attitude towards the EU has increased by 5%. It is only in Romania and Bulgaria, though, where less than half the citizens (42%) are content with their lives.
The Bulgarians, just like the rest of the Europeans, do not quite comprehend the mechanisms driving the EU.
As a whole, Bulgarians' opinion of the EU corresponds to that of the average EU citizens. Bulgarians have adopted a more realistic and pragmatic attitude but are not well-informed, the survey points out.
