Javier Solana, the European Union High Representative for Common Foreign And Security Policy is leaving is visiting the Middle East to try to limit the diplomatic fallout from the cartoons of the prophet Mohammed, first published by the Danish press affair.
Solana is scheduled to meet with heads of state in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine "for talks aimed at promoting dialogue and restoring and furthering relations of friendship and mutual respect between Europe and the Islamic world". He is also to confer on Monday, in Jeddah with the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. In Cairo Solana is also to meet the Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa.
In the Palestinian Territories, Solana will review with the Palestinian leaders the situation following the recent elections to the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and developments concerning the formation of a new government committed to the Middle East peace process.
