According to a survey by the Vienna Institute IBW on the influence of education over the economy, some of the most educated people in Europe are concentrated in the Sofia region. Prague is the first in the category with an index of 208, while Sofia's index is 193, the Bulgarian capital ranks fourth leaving behind Vienna and central Hungary (192).
However, it appears that most of the educated Bulgarians are concentrated in Sofia, since according to the compound education index Bulgaria only ranks 10th on the list of 12 possible positions. Estonia is the first, followed by the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Latvia. The Baltic countries are also leaders according to another criterion, namely that the educated people are evenly distributed across the country. According to this criterion Bulgaria, shares its place with Hungary, Slovakia and Austria. Croatia and Romania are the last.
