Democrat Barack Obama won the race for the White House on Tuesday, defeating Republican John MacCain to make history as the first black U.S. president. The 47-year-old senator from Illinois captured the support of the key states of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Florida, New York to become the 44th president-elect of the United States. The vice-presidency goes to Obama's running mate, Sen. Joe Biden. Many world leaders have applauded Barack Obama's election victory. French President Nicolas Sarkozy congratulated Obama in a letter released publicly, saying the American people, true to its values and freedom, has made its choice. European Commission President José Manuel Barroso used the occasion to call for a “new deal” between the United States and the rest of the world in order to solve problems such as the credit crisis.
